You want to pay down a balance, save for a home or set money aside for retirement. You can name the goal, even if you haven’t worked out every step to reach it.

Others sound less like goals and more like things you say at the end of a long day: “I wish an unexpected bill didn’t throw everything off.” “I want to be able to help my parents if they need me.” “I’d like to have more choices about the kind of work I do.”

These thoughts may never have made it onto a list of financial priorities. Yet each one says something about the life you want your money to support. Some of your most important money goals may be hiding in the things that feel difficult.

“Some of your most important money goals may be hiding in the things that feel difficult.”

Look for the Goal Beneath the Wish

Take “I want to worry less about money,” for example. That feeling is real, but it can be hard to act on until you understand what would help you feel more at ease. Would it be knowing how you’ll be able to cover an unexpected expense? Having a clearer picture of your bills? Feeling prepared to talk with a family member about a shared responsibility?

The same is true of “I want more freedom.” Freedom might mean being able to change jobs, take time to care for someone, or make a choice without immediately worrying about the cost.

Your answer will be personal. To give your goals direction, ask what you want your money to make possible.

“To give your goals direction, ask what you want your money to make possible.”

Put It Into Your Own Words

You don’t need to begin with a precise dollar amount. Start by finishing a sentence: “I want to be able to…” For example: “I want to be able to handle a car repair without scrambling to cover it.”

“I want to be able to help my parents while keeping up with my own household’s needs.” “I want to be able to consider a new opportunity without feeling trapped by my bills.”

Each sentence gives you something more specific to explore. You may still need to learn what it would cost, how much you could set aside, or who else should be part of the conversation. But now you know what you’re trying to work toward. You can start with a sentence before you start with a number.

Choose One Step That Helps You Learn More

Once you’ve named a goal, ask what you need to find out next. If you want to feel more prepared for an unexpected expense, you might begin by looking at what you already have set aside and which expenses tend to catch you off guard. If you hope to support a family member, you might start with a conversation about what they expect to need and what you could realistically offer.

That first step might be gathering information, asking a question, or setting aside time to review your options. It doesn’t have to resolve the entire goal at once. A first step doesn’t have to finish the plan; it just has to begin it.

Let the Goal Change When Life Does

A goal you write down today can change. A new job, a growing family, or a shift in your responsibilities may call for a different timeline or a different priority. Revisiting your goals gives you a chance to ask whether they still reflect what matters to you. A goal you revise is still a goal you’re taking seriously.

If you have a few minutes today, write down one thing you wish money made easier. Then ask yourself why it matters and what you could do to learn more about it. That may be the beginning of a goal you’ve had for a long time — one you’re finally ready to name.

FFS Agents — share this post with your networks using our resources in the ABO.

Some financial goals are easy to recognize.
